Our favourite 3 Lake District hikes.
So many fells, so little time! Planning a trip to the Lake District but don’t know where to start? With so many mountains and views in the Lakes, choosing which fells to climb can be a challenge in itself. So we asked our team for their favourite hikes for all abilities so you can grab that selfie in front of some of the most spectacular views in the world.
Coniston Old Man, 802m / 2634ft
Whether you choose an up-and-back route or a longer loop taking in more summits, the Old Man is an achievable challenge that offers great views as well as industrial heritage.
A fell that is rich in history, the remnants of old copper mines can be seen on the way to the summit. With views across Coniston Water and south Lakeland (and even out to sea, on a clear day), there are also (chilly!) wild swimming options en route.
Blencathra 868 m / 2,848ft
A walk for wild swimmers, twitchers and naturalists as well as adventure seekers!
With multiple routes to the top, choose from straightforward paths or one of the most challenging ridge walks in the Lake District. The iconic Sharp Edge is a ridge walk for experienced hiker, but there are also plenty of options for those seeking a more peaceful adventure.
Wild swimmers should head up Blencathra via Scales Tarn for spectacular views across the North Lakes, while the fells also offers plenty for bird watchers and flora and fauna lovers.
Orrest Head 238m / 730ft
Perfect for kids, this wheelchair and family-friendly walk offers big views for less effort.
Starting from Windermere village, the Orrest Head walk is a part of the Miles Without Stiles initiative. Wander through woodland as the easy-to-follow path rises gently to the summit for a unique vantage point with 360 views of the Lake District. It can be raining on one side, and sunny on the other! It’s a sight to see.
Don’t forget to pop into our National Park Print Shop stores in Ambleside and Windermere during your trip for souvenir prints, patches and stickers to celebrate bagging those summits!
