Squirrel spotting: where to find red squirrels in the Lake District.

The Lake District isn’t just a haven for hikers and nature lovers; it’s also one of the best places in the UK to spot the elusive red squirrel!

These charming critters, with their tufted ears and vibrant rust-colored fur, are a delightful sight against the backdrop of the region’s stunning landscapes.

But before you grab your binoculars, let’s discuss the differences between our furry friends!

Red vs. Grey Squirrels.

While red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) are smaller, measuring around 9 to 10 inches long, grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are larger, often growing up to 20 inches.

Red squirrels have a bushy tail and distinctive ear tufts, while greys are more robust and have a less pronounced tail.

Sadly, the introduction of grey squirrels has led to a decline in red squirrel populations, making spotting the reds even more special!
