Welcome to issue one of fwolk, a zine devoted to Northern folk and folklore.
The history of the Lake District is more than Wordsworth, the Romantic poets and Beatrix Potter. Our ‘wild’ and ‘natural’ places are not untouched by industrialisation, and that process goes back thousands of years. We spoke to archaeologist Steve Dickinson to find out more about the hidden history of the fells.
Other hidden things are revealed in this issue. Freediver Angus Hosking is on a mission to clear up the underwater places of the Lake District. As well as collecting submerged trash, the treasures he finds – from lost mobile phones to Victorian coins – tell the social history of the Lakes.
We celebrate midsummer and commune with our pagan ancestors (and some modern-day pagans) at Castlerigg Stone Circle. And we take a psychogeographic deep dive into the ebb and flow of human history with writer Gareth Rees.
Plus, screaming skulls! And we ask deep questions, like if an island doesn’t exist, can you swim around it?
40 pages. Printed on recycled paper.
Most of our prints and frames are made to order. This minimises waste and means your order is made to your requirements. Our A1/A2 prints have a turnaround time of around 4-7 working days. Everything else is usually posted within one working day.
UK orders under £10 have a small shipping cost of just £1.95. We have a flat UK shipping rate of £3.50 for orders over £10.
Orders over £80 qualify for FREE UK shipping.
We do offer shipping outside of the UK - to USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and certain EU countries. The shipping price will be calculated at checkout.
Delivery outside the UK may be subject to local import taxes and/or customs charges, which are your responsibility where they apply. If so, the shipping company should advise you of the charges due or else you should consult your local customs office.
All prints come unframed as standard but we can frame your prints as part of your order. Our frames are made from solid obeche wood in the UK with acrylic shatter-proof glazing for safety. Available in a white, black or oak colour finish.
Each wood frame is 22mm wide, with a wooden backboard. The frame is mount-less and supplied with a hanging system on the back, all you need is a picture hook or single screw.
It's a busy time of year but we know how important it is to get your orders delivered as soon as possible for Christmas.
All of our UK orders are produced and dispatched from the UK by Royal Mail.
